Ofcom is based on the issue of dark fiber

BT will not provide customers with closed-loop fiber - the ability to rent fiber-optic cables - forcing rivals to use BT services, such as 10 Gbps fiber-based Wavestream, when setting up their networks.

This means that Ofcom's latest proposals to allow the "virtual separation" of BT fiber, far from encouraging competition, could strengthen BT's position as the largest fiber network operator in the UK, according to David Harrington, the carrier of the regulatory affairs of the Association of Communication Administrators.

"There is a very real demand for dark fibers - for public and private enterprises - to interconnect sites and communication providers for recovery. BT will not supply it to protect its market from leased lines and Ofcom seems reluctant to take action, "he said.

Bill Murphy, general manager of BT's Next Generation Access program - part of BT's OpenTeat, Retail and Retail divisions - recently told Computer Weekly that BT will not provide dark fibers due to the experience of other network operators during the dot crash. com.

Today, people around the world are having to radically change the way they work and the way they manage teams of colleagues who work remotely. Fortunately, in our time, the technical means for full-fledged remote work not only exist, but are also available as never before.

The teleworking questions fall into two topics - tools and psychology. Psychological and organizational aspects are very important and interesting, but I will not consider them. I would like to outline the main technical issues that need to be considered in order to start remote work as quickly as possible and at the same time keep the productivity, security and morale of your business at the level not worse than during normal office work.

The first thing a remote worker needs is a computer. If the main work machine in the office is a laptop, no problem. But if there are desktops in the office, you have to decide what exactly employees are allowed to do on personal machines that you have no control over. It can only be working with mail and participating in online conferences, or it can be full access to corporate resources. In any case, employees must understand the need to install the latest security updates, antiviruses with up-to-date updates on their personal PCs, and correct home wireless network settings (strong passwords, encryption, network hiding). If working with personal devices is generally unacceptable for security reasons, I think the decision to purchase work laptops would be the right one in such a situation. IT readiness

If work laptops for all employees are not your scenario, you have to organize VPNs and a remote administration tool such as TeamViewer on personal devices. Not everyone can cope with installing and configuring software, so you will need help from your IT specialists, and remote help.

In general, at first, the load on IT services may increase, and the helpdesk will be inundated with requests with complaints about remote connection failures, setting up video conferencing, etc. The situation will be corrected by the presence of clear and understandable instructions for working with certain services, applications and systems, but the technical support staff are facing difficult days, and they must be ready for this.

Another important point - is the infrastructure ready to service the multiply increasing number of remote connections? Is there enough server capacity? Will the current Internet channel withstand the load? Do you have enough VPN licenses? All these questions require verification and a very quick solution in case you are not ready.

One more point concerns telephony. Even if everyone works from home, someone has to answer your company's main phone number when they call. If you haven't already taken steps to handle incoming calls with remote workers, it's time to do so.

Security

When work moves outside the secured perimeters, the security issues are many times greater. Therefore, it is important to make a distinction - what needs to be defended harshly and uncompromisingly, and what is not. For example, if an employee only participates in chats and calls, where there is no confidential information, it makes no sense to force him to log in through a VPN. Also, it is not always necessary to keep all applications for VPN, in many situations it is enough to have a properly configured Web Application Firewall and proper testing of the application with vulnerability scanners or pentests.

On the other hand, in areas where security is critical, mass remote work requires protection from specific threats associated specifically with remote access. There are many, and I will not list them here. I will just say that in a situation where it is necessary to switch to remote work quickly, to give a realistic assessment and draw up the correct scenario, an external auditor with high security competencies and developed industry expertise, such as Softline, is best able to do it.

And one more point: in the daily control of the security of infrastructure with massive remote access, in many cases it will be optimal to use cybersecurity services, such as DLP as a service, SOC as a service provided by a qualified and responsible external provider.

FIBER OPTIC CABLES AND EQUIPMENT

The transmission of video signals and digital data via conventional "copper" cables can no longer keep up with the ever-increasing demands for the transmission of signals of ever higher quality at ever greater speeds over ever greater distances. The problem is that the resistance and impedance of coaxial cables and twisted pairs limit the distance over which signals can be transmitted. Moreover, in any system, long-distance data conductors act like a giant antenna, which is subject to interference from a variety of sources, including interference from nearby conductors, currents induced by stray magnetic fields, and other extraneous sources of electrical noise.

An elegant and inexpensive solution to this problem is fiber optics. Optical fiber has a much wider bandwidth and lower loss than coaxial cable, which allows high-resolution images to be transmitted over very long distances without the use of route amplifiers or repeaters. And since the signal is transmitted in the form of a light beam, and not an electric current, the system becomes completely immune to any kind of electrical interference, including interference from neighboring conductors or high-voltage power lines

Broadband signal transmission . The wide transmission bandwidth of optical fiber allows high quality video, audio and digital data to be transmitted simultaneously over a single fiber optic cable.

Immunity to interference and interference . The complete insensitivity of the fiber optic cable to external electrical noise and interference ensures stable operation of the systems even in cases where the installers did not pay sufficient attention to the location of nearby power networks, etc.

Electrical insulation . The lack of electrical conductivity for fiber optic cable means that the problems associated with changes in ground potential, such as those in power plants or railways, are gone. This property also eliminates the risk of damage to equipment caused by current surges from lightning, etc.

Lightweight and compact cables . The extremely small dimensions of optical fibers and fiber optic cables bring a new lease of life to jam-packed cable ducts. For example, a single coaxial cable takes up as much space as 24 optical cables, each of which can presumably carry 64 video channels and 128 audio or video signals simultaneously.

Timeless communication line . By simply replacing the terminal equipment, rather than the cables themselves, fiber optic networks can be upgraded to carry more information. On the other hand, part or even the entire network can be used for a completely different task, for example, combining a local area network and a closed-loop TV system in one cable.

As CIO, my role is global in nature, as I also take on the responsibilities of a CTO and CEO of IT company. I joined Foxtrot almost two years ago, when Foxtrot was on the cusp of digital transformation; it was the beginning of Foxtrot’s IT infrastructure modernization journey.

There were a lot of issues when I took this position. There was 15-year-old Wi-Fi, server, and network infrastructure. There were no cloud solutions (we stored everything internally), and no intentions to go to market with IT services. It was a challenging position, but that meant it had so much potential. I saw the possibilities if only Foxtrot invested in the right solutions and systems that would modernize its outdated infrastructure.

And for the past two years, everything I’ve done to our systems has been in an effort to upgrade this infrastructure with an understanding of how it will impact Foxtrot’s business KPIs. To do that, we needed to overhaul our infrastructure, move our operations to the cloud, and, in particular, strengthen our security solutions, since security was one of the weakest points within our IT systems.
